About Dr. Irene Daria
Steps to Reading was created by Irene Daria, Ph.D., a developmental psychologist and reading specialist. After discovering that her son's prestigious Manhattan school wasn't teaching him to read, she embarked on a mission to understand why, and to help other parents avoid the same experience.
Dr. Daria found that millions of children labeled "learning disabled" were actually victims of ineffective reading curricula that taught guessing strategies instead of systematic phonics. She created the Steps to Reading workbooks so that all parents can have the tools to teach their children how to read.
Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Daria had a career as a newspaper reporter (Women's Wear Daily), magazine editor (Harper's Bazaar, InStyle), magazine writer (Parents, Money, Family Circle, Glamour), and author of three books. She brings both professional expertise in child development and a gift for clear, accessible writing to the Steps to Reading series.
A Message from Dr. Daria
“Do not blindly trust your child's school. Many schools in this country are doing a terrific job. But don't just assume your child's school is good. If your child is not learning to read, you can teach them yourself, and these workbooks show you how.”
